25 commentsWhat is a good quality beginner harmonica?
My 9 yr old son and I are going to take up the harmonica and I need to know what is a good quality and not too expensive harmonica. Also, I seen several pretty good (I guess) websites to teach, but if you have any specific suggestions I’d take them too. Thx
The vast majority of experts recommend the Lee Oskar Major Diatonic in C, or the Hohner Special 20 in C for a beginner. The cheap Chinese harps don’t last long. You are going to pay about 10 cents an hour to play the harmonica. So you will not save money by purchasing an extremely cheap harmonica. Coast2CoastMusic.com rates harmonicas just like Amazon.com rates books if you want to look there. Check out my profile. I answer harmonica questions all the time. Two of my answers are linked below.
How do I convert sheet music to harmonica tabs?
I don’t have any musical background, although I can identify and label notes in sheet music. (i think), so bear with me. Now how do I map these notes to the notes on a C diatonic harmonica? For example, how do you translate a C note on sheet music to the harmonica if 1,4,7,10 blow notes are all ‘C’s? try not to go into technical stuff please.

“BLUES is a passion, a feeling an emotion ….”
This is our short doc featuring The Colorado Blues Society’s “Blues In The Schools” program, hosted by 7News anchor Mike Landess. This was a very rewarding project during which I met many great musicians and kids. If this one doesn’t make you smile – well…. You can host the program at your favorite school by getting in touch with the Blues Society at coblues.com or Diamond-Star Media through this channel.
